Wilton is an inland town in northern Fairfield County, bordered by Ridgefield, Norwalk, New Canaan, Westport, Weston, and Redding. The Norwalk River valley drew the first settlers, Route 7 runs through the southern part of town, and the hills on either side are glacial ground. That same rock went into the old stone boundary walls still found across town. The town covers about 27 square miles and takes in Wilton Center, Cannondale, and parts of Georgetown and Silvermine, which it shares with neighboring towns.
USDA soil maps show much of Wilton on Charlton, Chatfield, and Canton soils: well-drained fine sandy loams formed in glacial till, often stony or very rocky, with bedrock within a few feet in the Chatfield areas. Water moves through these soils well, so drainage problems on Wilton lots tend to come from slope, ledge, and runoff.

Trees within a public road in Wilton are under the care and control of the town tree warden, and trees along state highways such as Route 7 fall under the state Commissioner of Transportation. Unless a tree is an immediate hazard, the tree warden has to post notice at least ten days before removing or pruning a road tree, and anyone who objects can ask for a public hearing.

Weir Farm National Historical Park, 60 acres on the Wilton and Ridgefield line and the former home of painter J. Alden Weir, preserves that kind of landscape.
